Diana Mumford, Burnaby Board of Education Chair,Address to the Burnaby Board of School Trustees by Diana Mumford, Chair
...This Board
sitting here tonight is outraged over the most recent substantial cuts
by the ministry to the Burnaby school district. In spring we were forced
to make cuts including services and supplies to the amount of $1.8
million to meet our legal obligation of a balanced budget.
Our MissionIn the latest provincial budget, the government froze school district budgets in the face of rising costs. That will mean larger class sizes, more school closures, and less support for children with special needs. Parents and teachers need to work together to stop the cuts because our students deserve better.
Burnaby Teachers' Association PositionThis year in particular there is a need to empower advocates for public education. As Diana Mumford said in her address at the first board meeting this year (above), there have been enormous cuts: the cut to the Annual Facilities grant, DPAC funding, unfunded cost pressures, and the requirement to report carbon emissions using SmartTool at a cost of 82 cents per student. We’d be fools not to be concerned about next year. All these cuts will amount to even greater challenges to our students’ learning conditions including class size and composition and services to students with special needs.
